Chironomus   Body length 5mm〜30mm, very various, living body color red〜dark red.   Charactaristic of Genus Chironomus with 2 pairs ventral tubules on the lateral sides of segment 11. Ventral tubules  variable in length, attenuate or spirally coiled. Lateral tubules on segment 10 with or without.　　   They are able to inhabit in eutrophicated area and organic contaminated area.

Median tooth trifid. Lateral teeth 6 pairs, first 2 mostly very closely approximated.. Ventromental plates separete medially by 1/3〜1/4 width of mentum.

With lateral tubules     Upper photo is C. plumosus　. 　　C.kiiensis,　C.circumdatus , C.niponennsis　     the same families.

Pecten epipharyngis : simple, consisting of about 10 or more teeth, the same length. Ｓ�T: plumose on both sides. Ｓ�U:simple, with weak setae.

C.yoshimatsui  is the representative kind of without  lateral tubules.  1 pair of the front shorter than reaｒ ward .　.

・Antenna with 5 segments, basal segment very strong, Lauterborn's organ small.　　　　　　 ・Mandible: few differences by the kinds. ・　The forms of S�T,S�U labral lamella and premandible difficult to find the difference. ・Length and form of the Lateral tubules, ventral tubules and anal tubules various by kinds.

Dicrotendipes

Body length 3〜8mm. Living body color pale red, head pale yellow. With 2pairs eye spot.  Procercus short , with 7 anal setae.
They inhabit in the eutrophicated area a little. Many kinds of Dicrotendipes distributed widely in the country.

Mentum: median tooth with a notch both sides or without and 6 pairs lateral teeth, 1st lateral tooth fused with 2nd tooth. , 4th〜６ｔｈ lateral teeth fused.  Ventromental plate narrow relatively in conparison with Chironomus　and　Einfeldia	Pecten epipharyngis simple, consisting of 5 teeth,    robust,  blunt teeth.  Ｓ�Tplumpse. Ｓ�Usimple ,thin.
	・Antenna with 5 segments, antenna ratio 0.8〜   1.3.Lauterborn's organ small , segment 4   comparatively long. ・Mandible : apical tooth and inner teeth blackish  brown, dorsal tooth pale brown. 　Seta subdentalis flat spatula. ・Labral sclerite 1 and 2 clealy separate. Frontal   apotome with variably formed anterior mark. or an  oval to round depression. Dicrotendipes pulsus　group・・・・・variably formed   anterior mark. Einfeldia
Body lengt 5〜10mm . Living body color red.  Head : Dorsal side of brown, Ventral side dark brown.
Many kinds of Einfeldia distributed widely in the country

Mentum ; median tooth simple (upper fig.) or trifid.   Ventromental plate with clear striae.		Einfeldia larva with 1 pair ventral tubules on        segment 11. or without
	Pecten epipharyngis :simple, distal row of teeth ( left fig.) or irregularly arrenged teeth (upper fig.) 　Mandible: basally on outer surface row of radially arrenged grooves.
		Antenna with 5 segments, segment 3 and 4 about the same length.

Glyptotendipes

Body length 5〜10mm. Living body color pale red 〜dark red.  Several kinds of Glyptotendipes distributed widely in the country

Median tooth dome shape or trifid, lateral teeth 6 pairs.   Ventromental plates almost in contact , dorsal margin finely toothed ,  striae clear.	Dorsal tooth light brown, apical tooth and 3 inner teeth  blackish brown. Seta subdentalis spatula shape.   Antenna with 5 segments,  antennal ratio 0.8〜1.2.   Segment 3 and 4 relatively long.     Lauterborn's organ small.
Ｓ�T; plumose to toothed on both sides.  Ｓ�U: simple, strong and long.   Pecten epipharyngis :20 or more irregularly arrenged teeth   Premandible with 2 teeth	Lateral and vental tubules absent.  Anal tubules corn or  spindle. Procercus short, with 8 anal setae.

Nilodorum

Body length 10mm. Living body color redish orange. Eye spot 1 pair. Ventral side of head dark brown. This larva inhabits in eutrophicated erea.  I caught it in river Sano (Osaka pre.)

Median tooth trifid , teeth of both side very small. Lateral  teeth 6 pairs. 2nd. lateral tooth fused with 1st..   Ventromental plate , slender, width 1.3 times of mentum,   dorsal margin finely small toothed.	Ｓ�Tstrongly plumose, . Ｓ�Usimple strong and long	Larval sclerite 1 and 2 present. Anterior  margin of frontal apotome slirgtly   concave,  with medially reticulated pit.
	・Mandible : pale dorsal tooth , apical tooth and 3 inner teeth.. Seta subdentalis short and broad., distal end irregularly small teeth. ・Labral lamella nomal. ・Pecten epipharyngis simple with numerous pointed. ・Antenne ; with 5 segments, segment 2 with Lauterborn's organs and a style. ・Premandible with 6 ponted teeth. ・1 pair of short ventral tubules present on both sides of segment 11

Goeldichironomus

Body length 7〜8mm.  Living body color pale red . Labral sclerite 1 and 2 present. with 2 pairs of eye spots.
I caught this larva in the small pond in desert of Tucson (U.SA, Arizona)

Dorsal tooth pale and small.  Apical tooth and 3 inner teeth    dark brown.   Seta subdentalis particularly large, sickle -shaped , with  numerous teeth along the inner margin.		Median tooth trifid. 6 pairs of lateral teeth.    1st. and 2nd. lateral teeth closely adjacent.      Ventromental plate wide.	Antenna with 5 segments., Ring organ situated in proximal 1/4 of basal segment.  .Blade shoter than flagellum.
・Ｓ�Tplumose on both sides.  Ｓ�Usimple, strong and long. ・Labral lamella normal.  Premandible with 2 teeth. ・Pecten epipharyngis with numerous teeth of variable length. ・Anal tubules 2 pairs ・Procercus low, with 7 anal setae.		Lateral tubules absent . 2 pairs of ventral tubules   present :   Anterior pair forked ( Goeldichironomus holoprasinus)
